Beware of Mortgage Mailers After You Close

After you close on a home, don’t be surprised if your mailbox suddenly fills up with official-looking notices about your mortgage.

Some of these mailers may use your lender’s name, loan amount, property information, or phrases such as “Important Mortgage Information,” “Final Notice,” or “Immediate Response Requested.” This can make them look like they came directly from your mortgage company when they didn’t.

Certain information from a home purchase or mortgage becomes publicly available. Marketing companies can use that information to identify new homeowners and send advertisements for things like mortgage protection, home warranties, insurance, refinancing, or other services.

Just because a company knows details about your mortgage does not mean they are affiliated with your lender.

Always read the fine print. Many of these advertisements will state somewhere that the company is not affiliated with your lender or mortgage servicer.

If you receive something regarding your mortgage and you’re unsure whether it’s legitimate, contact your lender or loan officer directly using a phone number you already know and trust.

When in doubt, verify before you respond.
